Ceroxylon quindiuense wax palm is the national tree of Colombia. It only grows in high altitudes in Cocora Valley and it is the tallest monocot plant in the world.
Naturally, Ceroxylon quindiuense is a palm that grows on the highest altitudes. Cocora is the only place of its growth. A tree can reach the height of 50 meters, and can live up to 120 years. The total area of the valley is more than sixty thousand square kilometers, and has an altitude between 1800 and 2400 meters. The regular felling of trees by indigenous people reduced drastically the number of palms, which forced the government to provide protection for the trees.
