The “Floating” Lake Palace of Udaipur

October 14, 2013 | in Travel

Lake Pichola is one of the oldest man-made reservoirs of modern India and Rajasthan in particular. The lake is located in the city of Udaipur, which is famous for its palaces and lakes. But the palace in the middle of the lake is a real masterpiece.

The Lake Palace is built on the Jag Niwas Island, and is not floating at all, but when looking at it you get this very impression. Udaipur is also known as the City of Lakes, for it is surrounded by a lot of lakes. The palace itself was built in the middle of the eighteenth century by Maharana Jagat Singh II, the sixty-second successor to the dynasty of Mewar of Udaipur. In 1961 the palace became a luxury hotel. During the drought, the hotel can be reached by land transport.
